Below is a list of error messages and potential problems, as well as the solutions.
Memory problems
* Not enough memory to open “Vikings”
“Vikings” requires at least 12 MB free RAM in order to work correctly. If this message or similar one appears, there are several ways to free additional memory:
1. Check that your computer has enough RAM by opening the “About This Macintosh…” window in the Apple menu, from the Finder. The total memory must be equal to at least 24 MB, and available memory must be equal to 16 MB or more.
2. If the available memory is lower than this value, you may have other applications running that are using the memory. They are displayed in the list at the bottom of the “About This Macintosh…” window (in particular, you should see the System software and SimpleText, which allow you to read this document). Activate them from the “Applications” menu on the right of the screen, and exit them.
3. Disable AppleTalk from the Selector in the Apple menu. The network occupies memory even when it is inactive, and slows down other applications.
4. Check your machine’s memory configuration, using the “Memory” Control Panel accessible from the Apple menu. The window’s contents may vary depending on your machine and the version of your system:
- reduce the size of the cache memory. 256 KB is sufficient for 16 MB total memory.
- the new memory manager should be active
- disable the virtual memory manager (as well as any memory compression or memory doubling application)
- delete the RAM disk, if it exists
- if the Control Panel offers a possibility, enable 32 bits addressing
- restart your computer
- check in the “About This Macintosh…” window to make sure you have enough available memory.
5. If the available memory is still insufficient, you have probably installed additional extensions or Control Panels in your system folder. You must disable them using the following procedure, depending on the version of your system (the version is displayed in the “About This Macintosh…” window).
- If your machine uses System 7.5, or an extension manager, you should follow these steps:
. in the “Apple” menu, open the “Extension manager” Control Panel
. disable the extensions or the Control Panels not required to start “Vikings” program (see the list below)
. restart your computer
. check in the “About This Macintosh…” window to make sure you have enough memory available
. when you have finished viewing “Vikings”, reactivate the extensions and Control Panels required.
- If your machine is configured in System 7.1, you should follow these steps:
. create two folders on your hard disk, named “Disabled extensions” and “Disabled Control Panels”
. drag the unnecessary extensions (see the list below) from the “Extension” folder in the system folder to the “Disabled extensions” folder
. drag the unnecessary Control Panels from the “Control Panels” folder in the System folder to the “Disabled Control panels” folder
. restart your computer
. check in the “About This Macintosh…” window to make sure you have enough memory available
. when you have finished viewing “Vikings”, move the extensions and the Control Panels back to their respective folders in the system folder.
Extensions required to start “Vikings”:
. CD-ROM Manager
. Sound Manager under System 7.1
. QuickTime
Control Panels required to start “Vikings”:
. Mouse
. Memory
Note: The Extension Manager in System 7.5 allows you to save configurations, and in particular to create a special configuration for “Vikings”; refer to the system manual for more details.
If you encounter memory problems again, make sure you have not installed new Control Panels or extensions.
Video and sound problems
* Unnatural colors or black and white screen
Other applications may interfere with “Vikings”. Close all open applications and restart “Vikings”.
* Sound breaks up, is irregular or does not exist
Check that you have disabled the network and closed all other applications. Check that your CD-ROM drive is quadruple-speed or more. Check in the “Sound” Control Panel that the output or the headphones are enabled, depending on your hardware (read your computer’s documentation if necessary).
* Quicktime
Error "QuickTime PowerPlug insallation failed because it was already installed" :
Delete all files with the word "QuickTime" on the extensions folder. Reinstall QuickTime 3 provided by the CD-ROM.
Special configurations
* PowerBooks
Some machines, and PowerBooks in particular, require so many special extensions that even in a standard 24 MB configuration, there is not enough memory to start “Vikings”. You must save memory by following the procedures described above, or as a last resort, purchase additional memory. Check your computer manual and talk with your dealer.
* Performas
Various programs initially installed on your Performa may interfere with correct operation of “Vikings”, may prevent it from running, or may slow it down. You should disable them as described in the “Memory problems” section.
